It’s that time of year and you need to start thinking about preschool graduation ideas! Whether it’s your first year teaching or you just want to mix things up a bit (sick of singing the same songs year after year?), The Preschool Professor has lots of ideas for you.
The transition from preschool to kindergarten marks a very important step in a child’s life. It is only appropriate to celebrate this moment with an event that will be as memorable as the rest of the year was.
Graduation Songs
Some teachers prefer to schedule a short but sweet ceremony during the last class period, in the regular classroom. The advantages are that you don’t have to reserve a separate space and that you know most of the children will be attending. Potential downsides, however, are that many of the parents might not be able to attend and you may be limited in space.
Other educators decide to plan a night to hold the preschool graduation ceremony. They will book a local auditorium (like a high school, or even a church) where the students can be up on a stage. This gives you more space (for the children and the audience) and a more formal atmosphere.
Still others decide to organize the ceremony outside, perhaps in the afternoon or evening. This may be a viable option, depending on your local weather during the graduation season. One thing to consider, however, is where the audience will be seated – do you have enough chairs?

The most informal way to do this is just to include the information in your parent newsletter. Make the parents aware of the day, time, and location and hope that many of them show up.
However, a more fun approach is to have the children take part in creating preschool graduation invitations to give to their parents. This lets the students become involved in the process and gets them excited about this important step in their lives.

You got it.
We all know that preschoolers have very short attention spans. You will want to plan your ceremony accordingly. Try to keep your activities in bursts of 5-10 minutes each.
Here is a sample schedule that I’ve found works for me:
- Welcome graduation
speech
- Preschool graduation songs
- Reading of preschool graduation poems – by
teacher or students
-
Student speeches (Depending on how many students you have. I
have each student tell the audience what they’d like to be when they
grow up)
- Another Song
- Handing out of preschool
graduation diplomas and graduation
gift
- Goodbye speech
Now it’s time for the big day! You’ve planned it all out, sent out invitations, and you’ve got a great crowd ready to watch your little preschoolers become kindergartners. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done, and then get ready to do it all again next year!
