Patriotic Crafts

So you want to make some patriotic crafts to show how proud you are of the red, white, & blue? Uncle Sam would be proud!

The cutest holiday decorations are always the homemade one made by children. You could make these crafts for Memorial Day, Independence Day (Fourth of July), Labor Day, or for anytime you want to be patriotic!

As with all craft activities with young children, you may need to do some of the preparation ahead of time – cutting out shapes, assembling some pieces, etc., depending on the ability level of the students.

Also, for safety reasons, please make sure to supervise young children that are using scissors (even safety scissors can cut), glue, and small pieces.

Patriotic Crafts to Wear


Patriotic Headband:
  1. Cut a 4" wide band of red, white, orpatriotic craft ideas blue construction paper, making sure length fits around head. Fold in half, then staple ends together.
  2. Cut 4 rectangles of white construction paper about 3x4" and 4 blue rectangles about 1x2".
  3. Draw white stars on the blue rectangles.
  4. Glue blue rectangles to the upper left corner of white rectangles.
  5. Draw red stripes on white paper to complete the flags.
  6. Staple flags onto tops of 4 straws.
  7. Staple end of straws onto headband.
  8. Wear with pride!

Poppy for Memorial Day:


memorial day crafts1. Cut squares out of aluminum foil and red tissue paper.
2. Glue the squares together and let dry.
3. When dry, cut a circle out of the tissue-covered foil.
4. Use a green pipe cleaner to poke a hole in the middle of the circle.
5. Put one end through the hole and bend it to one side.
6. Glue the pipe cleaner to the center of the flower.
7. Glue green seed beads to the center of the flower, covering up the end of the pipe cleaner.
8. Wear this poppy in a pocket or through a button hole on Memorial Day!

Patriotic Crafts to Hang


Patriotic Wreath:
  1.  Cut squares out of red, white, and blue constructionn paper.
  2. Fold squares in half to make trianges.
  3. Cut out the center of a white paper plate.
  4. Glue the triangles around the edge of the plate, alternating colors.
  5. Decorate with stars.
  6. Glue a loop of yarn to the back so you can hang up your wreath!

Patriotic Windsock:

patriotic windsock 1. Cut a piece of blue construction paper into a long rectangle - about 3x11".
2. Draw white stars all over the blue paper.
3. Glue the blue paper to the top of a piece of white construction paper.
4. Draw red stripes along the white paper.
5. Along the bottom back of the white paper, glue strips of red, white, and blue crepe paper streamers.
6. Wrap the white paper around to make a cylinder.
7. Punch two holes in the top and tie a piece of yarn in each to hang up your windsock.

Uncle Sam Pin or Magnet:
  1. Color one end of a wooden ice cream spoon with red and blue stripes for his hat.
  2. Color the other end pink for his face.
  3. Use a marker to draw eyes, nose, and mouth on the face.
  4. Cut the pointy ends off a toothpick and color it blue.
  5. Glue the dried toothpick between the hat and the face for the hat brim.
  6. Glue on some cotton balls for his hair and beard.
  7. Glue a pin back or magnet to the back.

Flag Necklace:

  1. Cut a heart shape out of a red plastic plate.
  2. Cut out a piece from a blue plastic plate to cover the upper left edge of the heart.
  3. Cut strips of thin white ribbon.
  4. Glue the ribbon strips onto the heart.
  5. Glue the blue piece to the heart.
  6. Stick gold stars to the blue section.
  7. Tape a paper clip to the back of the heart.
  8. String the heart onto a piece of ribbon or yarn to wear as a necklace!

Uncle Sam Mask:july fourth craft

  1. Cut a large hat shape of blue construction (square on top, rectangle on bottom).
  2. Cut 3 strips of red construction paper and glue on top part of hat for the stripes.
  3. Cut a white strip of paper the width of the hat, and glue right above the brim.
  4. Put star stickers all along the white strip for decoration.
  5. Cut out the inner circle of a paper plate.
  6. Glue the hat to the top half of the plate.
  7. Cover the bottom half of the plate with glued-on cotton balls for a beard.
  8. Tape a piece of elastic to both sides of the mask, so that child can wear on his/her head!
